THE FRONT LINE

2008 Super Bowl HDTV Party One HDTV for every five guests doesn’t sound like much — that is, unless you’re talking about 70 guests.

News From The “Other” Format War While the blue laser DVD battles continue, the war over next-generation multimedia interfaces is all but over.

CES 2008: Over The Top, As UsualThis year’s CES wasn’t characterized so much by “wild and crazy” product introductions as it was by iterations and evolution of existing technologies.

Warner Brothers Rejects HD DVD
For BLU-RAY
It wasn’t a complete surprise, but this defection may have tipped the scales against Toshiba’s blue laser format for good.

Are You Ready For Black Friday 2007 … And Beyond? Yes, there will be plenty of “limited quantity” deals to be had, if you’re crazy enough to stand in a line at 3 AM this coming Friday. But you’ll be able to score other deals as we get close and closer to Christmas, not to mention the 2008 Super Bowl.

LCD: It’s More Than “Good Enough” For Home Theater It looks like 3LCD technology for home theater projectors has finally caught up to single-chip DLP, perhaps even passing it in several ways.

Is It Time to Plan The Wake? Is the demise of rear-projection TVs finally at hand?

CEDIA EXPO 2007 CEDIA 2007 would probably sound like a pretty dull show if you heard that the big news was a bunch of upgrades to projectors, flat panels, and HD format disc drives.

Do You Really Need a BLU-RAY or
HD DVD Player?
Good question. Based on some tests I ran in my studio recently, the answer is — maybe not.

The Dog Days Of August? Not Quite… August is usually a slow month for consumer electronics news, but the past couple of weeks have seen some real interesting developments in digital TV, flat panel, and blue laser technologies.

1080P: The Last Word It’s been over a year since my last opus on 1080p, and two years since the original 1080p Reality Check article. And now for the final chapter (I hope)…

INFOCOMM 2007 The Pro AV channel, which had taken a back seat to the consumer channel in terms of manufacturer interest, is suddenly “hot” again.

Toshiba’s 2007 Line Show Toshiba chose the Tribeca Cinemas Gallery in lower Manhattan to show off their new line of Regza LCD HDTVs, assisted by Sopranos’ star Michael Imperioli.

Doesn’t Anybody Around Here Know How To Play This Game? Casey Stengel’s immortal comment fits perfectly after hearing the 2007 fiscal year results from several of the display industry’s heavy hitters in Japan and Korea. Most of those results were not good, and in some cases the company’s financial losses were substantial.

Sony 2007 Line Show Sony’s 2007 HDTV line show was held in part of a remodeled cold storage warehouse, located in a gritty, run-down area on Manhattan’s far west side — an odd location for unveiling so many upscale products.

Mitsubishi 2007 Line Show Mitsubishi is placing its bets this year on an all-1080p lineup, including an expanded line of LCD HDTVs.

Pioneer Electronics 2007 Line Show Pioneer’s new line of plasma HDTVs for 2007 are different. (Or are they?) The company also says it is re-inventing itself and re-defining its markets. (Or is it?)

Westinghouse Digital And Samsung 2007 Line Shows Westinghouse and Samsung held their 2007 line shows on the same day in New York City, used essentially the same theme, and set up shop just a few stops from each other on the same subway line!

NAB 2007: An Industry In Transition This year’s NAB show was relatively quiet when it came to news of breakthrough products.

Mobile DTV Showdown In The Desert  At this year’s NAB trade show, most of the “buzz” appeared to be about mobile digital TV reception. Several companies have been proposing systems and solutions for mobile DTV, and one (Qualcomm) now has its MediaFLO service running in several markets on UHF channel 55, serving up streaming video and clips to MediaFLO-equipped phones from Verizon.

Panasonic 2007 Line Show Panasonic is riding the plasma express big-time, and their 2007 HDTV line-up shows it.

What If… Way back in 1945, CBS developed a scanning color TV system that was never adopted. But what if it had been?

The Perils of SED A recent court decision forced Toshiba and Canon to break up their partnership in SED Inc. and dealt a major setback to the technology. So where does Canon go from here?

2007 Super Bowl HDTV Party  After a one-year absence, the Super Bowl HDTV Party returned in 2007 with a flourish and some very unusual displays.

CES 2007: Diamonds In The Rough This year’s running of CES was chaotic as usual. The crowds were larger, and the cab lines longer. There were more events held at the Venetian Hotel and Sands Convention Center, which turned a difficult-enough round trip from the Las Vegas Convention Center into an almost impossible journey.

JVC’S Latest D-ILA RPTV Goes On A Diet JVC is the latest company to roll out a thin RPTV and compete with the plasma and LCD onslaught. There’s a new, lower-cost JVC 1080p front projector, too.

LG Electronics 2007 Line Show LG’s 2007 line show was almost as newsworthy for what was missing – including a key executive – as it was for what new products were shown

Wheeling and Dealing for Christmas Shopping for a new HDTV this holiday season? Plasma and RPTV set prices are falling through the floor. Here are some price and market trends to keep in mind.

CEDIA EXPO 2006: A Review If you haven’t been to Cedia Expo in a few years, you’re in for a surprise — it’s more like a mini-Consumer Electronics Show these days.

CEDIA EXPO 2006: Trends You Need To Watch This year’s edition of the show was full of aggressively priced, plug-and-play HDTV products, not the usual Cedia Expo fare.

LG Electronics’ Summer 2006 Line Show On a hot, humid night in late July, the last place I expected to wind up was inside a wax museum. But that turned out to be a good thing, because wax melts easily and has to be kept cool. What better place for a summer line show?

1080p: A Year Later A year ago, I sat down and pounded out an article about all the hyperbole, buzzwords, and fallacies surrounding the push for 1080p imaging. It’s time to revisit the subject!

1080P – Time for a Reality Check!
Thinking about buying a new 1080p rear-projection TV, front projector, or LCD TV? You might want to read this first.

1080P – Q&A
1080p continues to be a “hot button” story, judging by reader emails. This article addresses specific questions about 1080p display and signal formats.

INFOCOMM 2006 InfoComm isn’t the “must attend” show it once was for unveiling cutting-edge, innovative display technologies. Even so, while the show’s focus is more on applications these days, there were still a few gems here and there to be unearthed.

Hitachi 2006 HDTV Line Show Hitachi had a few surprises ready at their 2006 East Coast HDTV Line Show, not the least of which wasn’t shown — a full line of rear-projection TVs.

Samsung 2006 HDTV Line Show Samsung is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of LCD panels, so it should be no surprise their 2006 TV product line show emphasizes LCD HDTVs.

NAB 2006: HDTV or BUST! At this year’s show, there was plenty to talk about and products to see when it came to HDTV. There was even a demo that went far beyond HD!

1080P – The Masses Have Spoken My two articles on the topic of 1080p (1080p Reality Check, published in July 2005, and 1080p Q&A, published in August 2005) have drawn quite a bit of attention lately. In fact, so many letters and comments have come in this past week, they deserve their own article.

Mitsubishi’s 2006 HDTV Line Show Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America (MDEA) held its annual line show for the press on April 7th at the Hyatt Regency Resort in Huntington Beach, CA. The 2006 line of TVs isn’t as big as in past years, but the company’s focus is quite clear — 1080p. And there was a trick up their sleeve, too.

Toshiba’s HD DVD Demo I took some time today to catch the HD DVD demo at the Tweeter store in King of Prussia, PA. Was it impressive? Sort of. Could it have looked better? Definitely!

Panasonic’s 2006 Digital Lifestyles Show On March 28, Panasonic jammed several members of the consumer electronics press and several new plasma TVs, digital cameras, and DVD recorders into BB King’s Blues Club and Grille on 42nd Street in New York. It was a tight fit, but well worth the visit.

Standing in the Shadows Canon and Toshiba’s SED technology is taking on cult-like status. Will it ever come to market?

LG.Philips’ 100-inch LCD Panel:
an Ego Boost?
On Wednesday, March 8, LG.Philips LCD (LGL) showed an unprecedented 100-inch (diagonal) TFT-LCD panel. This leapfrogs the Samsung 82-inch model shown at CeBit last year, and by Sony at CES 2006.

Are We All Bozos On The HDTV Disc Bus? Some readers may be old enough to remember the Firesign Theater and their unique combination of satire, absurdism, and political humor that spanned several albums in the late 60s and early 70s.

In The Blink Of An Eye Are you in the market for a late-model terrestrial DTV set-top box? Good luck with finding one; they’ve all but disappeared!

The Die Is Cast: Goodbye, Analog TV With President Bush’s signature, the fate of analog TV broadcasting has finally been sealed, and TV is going digital on February 17, 2009 — ready or not…

A Letter To Our Readers HDTVexpert.com is a little over one year old, but readership is growing rapidly. Here’s what to look for in 2006.

Too Much Is Never Enough When it comes to the world’s largest consumer electronics trade show, CES’ motto seems to be “Too much is never enough!” This year’s attendance reportedly exceeded 150,000 and the 2006 event spilled out of the cavernous Las Vegas Convention Center over to the Sands Expo Center, just like the late, lamented Comdex show used to do. (Anyone remember Comdex?)

Behind The Scenes At Monday Night Football Early in December, I was invited to tour the high-definition production trucks that broadcast ABC’s Monday Night Football in the 720p/60 high-definition format with surround sound. If you think keeping up with all that goes on in a football game is difficult, you should try sitting in the director’s chair!

Falling Plasma and LCD Prices
Have Japan Reeling
Pioneer Electronics, stung by falling prices and lower-than-expected sales numbers of plasma TVs and DVD recorders, announced its chairman, Kanya Matsumoto, and president, Kaneo Ito, would step down this morning as the company prepares to announce at least a $200 million loss for the end of fiscal 2005.

HD-DVD vs. BLU-RAY: Should You Even Care? Toshiba has delayed the rollout of HD-DVD to 2006; about the same time that Blu-Ray will make its debut. Will both HD disc formats be met with applause, or a big yawn?

Flat-Panel Monitors
and Urban Legends

One Gallon = 2 Quarts?
If you bought a gallon of milk and found it half-empty, it’s a safe bet you’d raise heck with the store manager. Similarly, if you bought tickets to a basketball game that ended at halftime, you’d want a refund pretty darn quick. So why settle for half the picture resolution on your HD monitor or projector?

Time To Cry “Uncle”?
NEC did it. Sony says they’ll do it. Fujitsu is thinking about it, too. What’s “it?” Why, giving up on the plasma display business — either manufacturing, marketing and selling, or both.

NAB 2005:
Where'd Everybody Go?

Why, to the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, of course! Where else would you find Sony, Apple, Avid, Thomson, Canon, Tandberg, Sanyo, Barco, Evertz, Grass Valley – well, you get the picture…

Left Behind: Analog Video Processing Goes ‘Down the Tubes’ Many consumers who buy their first EDTV or HDTV set are shocked to find out just how bad analog video looks on these sets, and are returning them to stores.

CES 2006: MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK What You Really Need To Know About CES 2006
The sheer number of TVs and related products at this show is enough to make anyone’s head spin. But dig we must, to find the wheat buried in the chaff of press releases and hype! Here’s my considered list of CES display products, technology trends, and price trends that you should keep an eye on for 2006.

INFOCOMM 2005:
Nothing Out of the Ordinary

SID 2005: LCD’S Full Metal Jacket

The market for flat panel displays may be maturing, but the underlying technology isn’t remaining stagnant.

The 2005 Super Bowl Hdtv Party
It had plenty of hype. It showcased two storied teams, including a two-time NFL champion. It had hordes of die-hard Eagles fans, dressed in green. It was delivered in a 100% high-definition broadcast from Fox with surround sound and featured a halftime show by the one and only Sir Paul McCartney.

CES 2005 If there was a theme at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, it had to be this: “We manufactured it, because we could!” Pocket projectors, super-sized plasma, flat screen TVs with built-in digital video recorders and LCD monitor with LED backlights were all part of the scene.

Just How Important Is 1920x1080 Imaging In A Display?
If you follow the electronic display market as I do, you know that one of the hot topics now is ‘1080p’. More specifically, it means having a front projector, rear-projection monitor, or flat-panel display with true 1920x1080 pixel progressive-scan imaging.

There’s no question that Cedia Expo 04 has gone ‘mainstream’, what with over 24,000 attendees this year.

CLASSIC FRONT LINE

2003 was a watershed year for display technology and video as "next year" finally arrived.

This year’s running of CES was, above all, a celebration of thinness. Everywhere you looked, you saw walls, racks, tiles, frames, and cavalcades of flat-panel TVs

A record 65 guests attended the fifth annual Super Bowl '04 HDTV Party.

Happaugue HVR950, HVR1600,
and AV Toolbox ATSC-100 DTV Receivers
Believe it or not, all analog television broadcasting was supposed to shut down this past January 1, yet we still have thousands of NTSC transmitters perking along across the country. But it’s a pretty good bet that they won’t be after February 17, 2009. There’s simply too much sentiment in Washington, DC to move the transition along to its inevitable conclusion.

Westinghouse Digital LTV-40W1
HDC LCD/DVD HDTV
Many years ago, Ross Bagdasarian (“David Seville” from Alvin and the Chipmunks) wrote a satirical song called “Hey, That’s Almost Good!” Well, the same could be said about Westinghouse Digital’s LTV-40W1 LCD/DVD HDTV — except that it’s better than “almost good.”

Vizio P50HDM Plasma Monitor You won’t find this 50-inch plasma monitor in big box stores or at the mall; only at wholesale price clubs and on the V Inc. Web site. Does it deliver the goods?

Panasonic PT-AE900U LCD Projector
Ever since the HDTVexpert.com review of Sanyo’s PLV-Z4 was posted; I have been inundated with emails asking how it compared to Panasonic’s latest LCD home theater projector. Enough! I’ve finally gotten my hands on a review sample of the PT-AE900U, and here’s what I found.

Accurian 16-3499 Terrestrial Digital TV Receiver It’s not often that I review a closeout product, but the Accurian DTV set-top receiver was brought to my attention earlier this month by an alert reader in Jacksonville, Florida. The reason? Radio Shack had slashed the price to $89.98!

Sanyo PLV-Z4 Widescreen LCD Projector The PLV-Z4 is the latest in a line of popular, low-cost widescreen LCD projectors from Sanyo. While each new model has offered incremental improvements to image quality, the Z4 represents a marked departure from its older siblings with a whole new design and a few new tricks.
