“Display Interfaces: Progress, or Babylon?”

The move to 4K and next-generation television has hit a bit of a stumbling block: The display interface. Several standards are competing to be the preferred connection for UHD displays, but the most widely used interface isn’t nearly fast enough to do the job. On top of that, there are wireless options for connectivity to consider, and there is even some thought that moving instead to a pure AV-over-IP architecture will fix everything. With affordable and large 5K, 6K, and even 8K displays looming in the near future, this display interface roadblock must be moved, and quickly! This paper will explain the differences between each standard, calculate the maximum clock rates each can support for UHD signal transport, and introduce Display Stream Compression (DSC), a new concept for display interfacing that will help manage the bandwidth issues as we go ever higher in pixel counts and color bit depths.
