InfoComm 2011: IST4 RF Past, Present, and Future

The world is going wireless! (At least, it wants to.) From the recent DTV transition to white space devices, from mobile handheld (MH) broadcasting to the national wireless broadband plan, everyone wants a piece of the RF spectrum – and those who already hold it don’t want to give it up. This all-day Super Tuesday session will cover the latest regulatory and spectrum allocation trends in the United States and will update the status of white spaces, wireless audio, and the move to take away as much as another 120 MHz of the UHF TV band. Instructor Gino Sigismondi of Shure and I will also provide a refresher on the basics of RF, including antennas, filters, amplifiers, and distribution techniques. Should be fun! (And with any luck, I will be able to conduct a live demo of the new ATSC mobile handheld DTV standard.)

What’s the latest thing in display technology? Is 3D just a fad, or does it have legs? What about networked TV? Are OLEDs ever going to break out, and what happened to motion recognition for system control? Find out the answers to these and other questions as Pete reviews the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, the 2011 NAB show, and other significant technology announcements and showcases for the first six months of 2011.
